John wins four-year term with 3,106 votes
Thanks to all those who supported my re-election as Mayor of the City of Elmira. I'm truly honored to continue the work we started over the past two years. I'm committed to restoring the City's fiscal health, nurturing the rebirth of downtown, and making the City cleaner and safer. Thank you for your support. Together, we're making a difference.
Show your commitment: Vote Nov. 6
Each year, only a fraction of those eligible to vote excercise their right by going to the polls. There's a lot at stake this year, which is why I'm encouraging Elmirans to take time to learn all they can about candidates for City Council, state Supreme Court and other races -- and vote. Our future depends on it.
Committed to the Future. Committed to Elmira.
Dear Elmiran,
As a political newcomer, I challenged the status quo and set a new tone of open and collaborative government when I took office on January 1, 2006. Now, less than two years later, I've helped make Elmira government more transparent and accountable than ever, and I've worked to make Elmira a better place to live and work.
Over the past year and a half, we've ended a decade of deficit spending, and I've supported efforts to reorganize City offices to make them more efficient, cracked down on delinquent property owners, reduced red tape for developers, and championed one-block-at-a-time efforts that have breathed new life into downtown.
The work of mayor is hardly the work of one man. These and many other accomplishments have come as the result of the hard work of City staff, City Council, business and community leaders, educators, and citizens. As mayor, I've encouraged people to work together, to challenge old ideas, to take risks, and to get involved. It's paid off. New creative efforts have made the City more fiscally sound, more dynamic, and more welcoming.
Though the City Council, new City Manager and I inherited a $3 million deficit that threatens to bankrupt the City, I made it a priority to make the public aware of the problem, outline solutions, and make tough choices that will stabilize Elmira finances for years to come.
I've led these efforts in a non-partisan fashion, encouraging debate, not quashing it. I'm proud of the fact that this Council has yet to cast a single party-line vote. My goal is to listen, take action, and get people involved in their City.
It has been my honor to serve, and we still have a lot of work to do. With your vote, I'll continue to work hard for you because I'm Committed to the Future and Committed to Elmira.
Sincerely,
John
